Little River Usage

Friends,

This is a reminder that the PRSC has designated the Little River channel between VA and TR Island as a small boat* only zone. Teams should not practice in the space with big boats (8+, 4x/4+-) or with coaches in safety launches that throw wakes.

Although the space is great when weather conditions are not ideal on the rest of the river, this location offers one of the few areas of usable water for our paddlers. Sprint canoes and kayaks, if you are unfamiliar, are less stable than almost any rowing shell.

This “rule” is a gentleman’s agreement that the PRSC decided upon decades ago. Although there is no legal basis for this agreement, we ask and hope that everyone respects it as something we do as a community to support each other.

*Regarding sculling boats (2x, 1x), who are OK to use the space, be aware and vigilant when using the space.  Keep formations tight, wakes to a minimum, and communication open and positive. Little River is tight, and groups must be mindful of their impact on other users/squads. You may think a situation is OK, and other users may not feel safe.

We all want to get on the water and get the work done, but sometimes Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. It is not a fair trade to trample others to get what you need. Head coaches and program leads- please make sure your assistant coaches and your coaches who are new to the river are aware of the PRSC Guidelines (https://potomacriversafetycommittee.org/) where all our local information is provided.

Thanks!

George
